Her Stories on my Stone Henge
"For most of history, Anonymous was a woman"
The inspiration for this body of work is the millennium rich heritage of Pakistan. It is a celebration of my childhood memories of playing in the ancient slate cemeteries of the Gangar Hills of Hazara and, even as a child, marvelling at the rock carvings in Gilgit, where my parents lived in the 70s and being mesmerised by the Gandhara art I saw at the Peshawar museum. The wonder of rock carvings is such that, even after thousands of years, they tell stories of a world gone by. If my work survives a thousand years, I wonder what stories my markings on the stones will tell.
I have a special bond with the ancient trees of Islamabad, because protecting them as natural monuments has been a passion since 2006. Displaying my work under an ancient tree is also a celebration of protecting the wonderful art of mother nature.
